It is so hard to believe he is here! The first night we decided NOT to send the boys to their Grandmothers when Gilbert went to work at the firehouse. It was a normal day, nothing special going on, I took the boys to daycare and cleaned house a bit. No out of the ordinary contractions or symptoms to make me think labor was coming. April 8, 2010 was Gilbert's shift at the firehouse, he would come home Saturday, April 9th. I told the younger boys, Bryan and Patrick we would have a camp out in mommy's room. This is something we always do when daddy works. They sleep in bed with me, and then they tell on me in the morning to their dad, because he does not like the "bad habit" I started.

Around 2am I woke up with some pain, which I thought to be a cramp because of how I was laying in bed with the boys, trying not to fall out of bed. I got up to use the bathroom and realized it was a contraction. Didn't pay much attention, I have had them before and they hurt, so I went to lay back down and had another. They were radiating to my back, so I decided to sit at the computer for a bit and time them. I had another, and then another and they were about 3 to 5 minutes apart. The pressure was getting worse with each one. I called Gilbert about 2:30am and he said he would head home, of course I told him to wait it out first, but he was the smart one and got ready to leave the firehouse. I called my son David on his cell phone to wake him and tell him If I called again, I needed a ride to the hospital. Yes, he is in the same house, but I was scared to walk down the steps (LOL). A few more painful contractions and a few more phone calls to Gilbert and I decided at about 2:45am to go to the hospital. I called my son and he came up to get me, It was starting to hurt to walk. At 3:00am from the car I called L&D at the hospital to tell them we were on our way, I heard nurses laughing and I asked them why they were laughing. They said due to the weather???? Low Pressure and Rainy they had a few women coming in claiming active labor. I hung up the phone and and said to my son, "This is number 6, do they think I don't know what labor feels like!!"

When we arrived, It hurt to walk and the pressure was intense with each contraction. I registered, which is crazy, they make a women in active labor stop in the emergency room to register, can't they take care of that stuff later. David walked with me to L&D, I asked him to please stay in the waiting room until the sun came up. It was about 3:15 am, and I did not want him driving home alone, tired. He agreed and they took me straight back to triage.

The nurse checked me right away, I was 8cm dilated and my bag of water was bulging. Looks like we are having a baby! They called the doctor and had me walk to a delivery room, Gilbert arrived just as I was getting to my room. Dr. Bowman walked in a few minutes after Gilbert. They decided to break my water, knowing baby would arrive soon after. My water was broke and the contractions continued to come. Dr. Bowman checked me again, I was a 9-10 and he felt babies head, and told me to push. I did and I could feel baby coming down.....I did not have the urge to push like a normally do, I think because he was already in the birth canal. I pushed three times and he was out. No tares or anything.....just a beautiful baby boy. Born at 3:49am, within 49 minutes after I called the hospital to say we were on our way. Looks like he could have been another home birth if I stayed home.

He was a little purple, so they took him and warmed him up a bit and suctioned him, he came so fast he didn't have time to push out all the mucous and stuff, they blew a little oxygen by his face and he pinked right up. They brought him over and he began nursing right away like a champ! A little bit later they took him washed him up and we moved to a recovery room.

Of course, the nurse and my husband went to the waiting room to get David to come see the baby, do you think he was there? Of course not, I called him on his cell phone and he was almost home, he didn't wait like I asked, but then again the 17 year old is stubborn so I guess I should have not expected any different. I am proud of him and grateful he was calm and responsible. My wonderful oldest son drove me to have my last born, youngest son. I will always remember that. When Gilbert and I were married, David walked me down the aisle and gave me away as my oldest son (he was then in 5th grade), another wonderful moment.

Michael (15 yrs old) woke up and came in my room to lay with the younger boys until Gilbert's mom arrived, again a responsible, great young man. Michael also played a roll when Gilbert and I were married, he gave the blessing at the reception and also carried the rings. My older boys have always been such a blessing to me.

Everything went so fast....now he is here. You wait so long for the little miracle to arrive, and then in the blink of an eye, it is over and you begin your new journey. You look back on delivery no matter how it went and wonder what could have been different. Sometimes I want to freeze the moment, because it is such a miracle. When you know it is your last as well, you ponder over the fact that you will not experience birth again. I was blessed as usual with this birth, everything went well and normal. The only thing I wanted different was that they always rush you to push and get the baby out. After they broke my water, even though I was fully dilated, I just wish they would have left me alone to push when my body was ready and not make me hurry up, doctors and nurses tend to rush you.

God Bless Nicholas Ryan! My next post will be a little bit about Kimberly Grace. Then an update on how Nicholas is doing and the family, as we all come together. Then the blog will be over. I hope you continue to read those posts.

As well, please make comments if you like. I am having my blog printed into a hard bound book for Nicholas and my children for memory and your comments would be a wonderful contribution.

Christine
